Six questions for Edmonton lawyer Shaun Hennessy

Why did you become a lawyer?
A lot of people told me I had a good aptitude for being a lawyer.

What is it about being a lawyer that you enjoy the most?
It is finding solutions for legal problems when there doesn’t appear to be any obvious solution at the start. Sometimes, you have to think outside the box.

What is the biggest misconception about the work done by lawyers?
It is a common misconception that lawyers enjoying battling against each other and in the process running up their hourly billings. The lawyers I know are not like that at all. They work together much more often than they get into disputes and are focused on achieving cost efficient solutions.

If you had the opportunity to give a client just one tip, what would you say?
That’s easy. Don’t look at your case entirely from your point of view. There are always two sides in a legal case. It is not reasonable or helpful to assume that you are 100 percent right and the other side is 100 percent wrong. Both parties have to see things objectively to reach a settlement.

Do you think the search for a lawyer should be based on gender?
I think it is more important to do your due diligence. Don’t just accept the recommendation of a friend or relative. Do your research. Don’t make gender a factor in your decision making. Choose the best person.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work as a lawyer?
I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and our two dogs. I play a lot of sports with my favorites being golf, squash and hockey.
